Sacred Games : Netflix
Sacred Games is the premiere Hindi Netflix series in India. Produced by Phantom production who are known to invest in edgy stories.Based on the 1000 page Vikram Chandra novel by the same name. The story is, for the large part, set in Bombay/ Mumbai and revolves around the lives of Ganesh Gaitonde played by Nawzuddin Siddiqui, a peculiar O.G, and Sartaj Singh played by Saif Ali Khan, a low rank moral police officer stuck in an amoral department. The show runs parallel stories of the past of Gaitonde and present of Satraj.
As it is set in Mumbai themes of gangs, corruption, Bollywood conspiracies, drugs, crime, immigration, Muslim ghettoisation, communalism and Indian post liberalisation politics plants a foot of the show in reality yet as the name suggests the show also has a Indian mythical bent. Where each title, story telling and apoclaiptic plot has a theological aspect to it.Season 1 released in 2018 has been critically and popularly appreciated for its thriller element, cool dialogues and palpable violence and humour. Performances by Radhika Apte as a RAW agent, Pankaj Tripathi as a God man and Jitendra Joshi as Sartaj's buddy cop among many others are very memorable. Writers Varun Grover, Smitha Singh and Vasant Nath have made changes to source material which were necessary because of language and medium change. After past unsuccesful attempts, by AMC and others, to produce a movie from the hit novel, Netflix brought together this property with Vikram Motwane as the director and Anurag Kashyap as the co director in form of a series. A very challenging project as each episode is set in present day as well as Bombay of the 80's. Despite all the challenges the production of first season has been largely flawless.I really liked the show as the story is gripping, production looks spotless, dialogues are really catchy, if you know the language, and acting performances are extraordinary. Most of the show is in vernacular language but has the credibility to appeal to a larger audience. It is a show for mature audiences and a great start for this type of Indian content. Netflix bags big success with this title.Second season is out in a few hours.
It will be a big challenge maintaining the quality. I hope it will do well. A phenomenal debut by India since Sacred Games is her first series on Netflix. The amazing story, direction, camera works is just some of the very few elements that makes this show such a great one.The portraying of Mumbai/Bombay during both the 90s/2000s and present day throughout the series is something that the crew have aced. The very little details will leave you amazed. The great narrative mixed with its intense dialouges is something that makes the series truly iconic. The extraordinary performances of Nawazudding Siddique, Saif Ali Khan has really has really succeeded in portraying the crimes of Mumbai and also the emotional element of the show. Each character has their own unique involvement in the story which just helps the narrative to grab the viewers attention. One of the best series I have watched in a long time and I am not just riding the bandwagon of hyping up. I watch a lot of drama documentary and series and this is something that truly makes me satisfied. Every seconds of watching this series was worth it.1 person found this helpful.Review menu iconHarsha Swamy2 years agoI was looking forward to sacred games, adapted from the novel by Vikram Chandra and there was never a moment that let go of my attention.
It's definitely binge worthy and I would rate it on par with the recent 'Unabomber' and Mindhunter. The politics of Religion is the catalyst that creates situations which in reality has affected all of us. Manufactured crisis with religion as the vehicle driven by politicians, Bollywood, terrorists and criminals is the central theme. I read the book about 5 years ago. It did put a certain demand on the reader to familiarize himself with the many Hindi words and songs referenced in the text, but overall I was highly impressed and counted it among my best reads.Wonderful then to find that Sacred Games had been serialized and was available on Netflix in my country (Belgium)!Compacting such a large and dense novel into about 6 to 7 hours of viewing time is a challenge, but as far as I am concerned it can be counted as one successfully met.I note that many commentators consider that there is too much sex on show here, but readers will recall that the violent events of the end of the novel were triggered by Jo-Jo's sex-related revelations to Gaitonde. The vast number of shootings tend to pall, but again the central figure is a gangster.
What Vikram Chandra did very well was to show the immense venality and moral bankruptcy of the political classes in India, where corruption extends from the very top and affects all of society. I think this is well portrayed in the series.Apart from that the series is visually attractive and well-constructed, I have yet to see the last two episodes, but would recommend the series at all. Each character even it's has a screen space of few minutes leaves and impact. Nawaz has the strongest character but for me it was Saif ali khan and as he had played it to perfection from a low performing cop having personal and mental issue and has captured the vulnerability of the character finely and later the way he grows in Sartaj Singh as he unravelles the mystery and its time to shine it's very few of his roles be it ek hassina thi or langda Tyagi this role re invents him againBut the real heroes are directors and writers and they have efficently and responsibily used the freedom a platform like Netflixprovides (no censorship) .Again this is very addictive series and looking forward for the second season and probably this is new beginning for indian television/webseries.
